What gears should I get?
Ok I think that gears will be my next project and I need help deciding which ones to get. My engine is totally stock other than the CAI and I've heard that 4.10's are good as long as you don't plan on going over 60 mph and noticing a difference. 3.73's I've heard are the best bang for buck. I'm looking for something that is strong off the line but also decent on the top end as well. What do you guys think?

Re: What gears should I get?
There is only like 400 to 600 rpm difference between the 3.73 vs 4.10, can't remember right of the top of my head.

ok 4.10 is what I'm going to get. Any idea how this will affect the speedo?

Re: What gears should I get?
You'll need to change the speedo gear in the trans. It takes about ten minutes and they are about $20.

Cool, thanks Mike. What do you think about the sig?!

Re: What gears should I get?
I have 3.73's, wish I had done 4.10's. BraMas had 4.10's, now he's got 4.30's I think. His gas mileage hasn't suffered too much and the RPM is not an issue.

Re: What gears should I get?
Awesome, that's another thing that I was worried about. I just changed the fluid and filter in my transmission and they whole car seems to be running smoother now. Who knows if it's ever been done before. I'm hoping that the fuel mileage goes up a bit. 4.30's huh? So many choices!!!

Re: What gears should I get?
I'd never go above 3.73's with a manual especially if you drive on the interstate. I still manage low 1.8 60' times with my 3.73's and it is still tollerable rolling 70-80 mph down the road.

Re: What gears should I get?
The general thought is also 3.73s for FI, 4.10s naturally aspirated. I'm running 3.73s. I have a problem with traction. I lost 2 mpg on my commute by putting in 3.73s. It went from 22 to 20 mpg. It was well worth it. I drive 500 miles per week and it only costs an additional $6.25 per week in gas. 4.10s will not cost much more. If you have an automatic get 4.10s.

Re: What gears should I get?
I am running 4.56 gears in my lightning. With a 6# pulley and nitrous was a lot of fun. Now I have put the stock pulley on it and taken off the N2O but I still have the gears, lots of fun going through town. Highway kinda sucks running 3,000 rpm's in overdrive...

Re: What gears should I get?
Just put 4:10's in mine ( LOVE 'em!!! ).
Runnin' 3000 @ 80mph. , haven't checked mpg. yet, but haven't noticed a difference. Big difference on take off!!! Mine is an auto, now gets rubber in 2nd gear, without touching the shifter, & w/few mods.

Re: What gears should I get?
yeah the 4:10's will get you off the line a bit faster but takes more revolutions of the shaft to spin the tires over so your top end may be a bit off but probably nothing too noticible. but then again every bit counts in the 1320! Just in case you guys didnt know how gear ratios work and Ignore this if you do, but the first number is the number of revolutions it takes to turn the wheels over one full rotation and the second is the percentage of rotation so on a 4:10 it takes 4 revs and 10 percent of a turn. Hope this helps figure out what you want. again sorry if ya'll already know this...

This makes no sense to me. A set of 4.10:1 gears means the ring gear has 41 splines and the pinion has 10, meaning for every 4.1 turns of the pinion gear, the ring gear turns once. This has nothing to do with your wheels, because you can always put new wheel/tire combos on your car whenever you please.

Maybe I was confused. Just what my dad told me a long time ago. I must have mistaken wheels for ring gear. Sorry about the mixup

Here is a little useless post. But it shows the difference between a 2.73,3.55 and a 4.10 Pinion
