Re: Thinking about getting some gears
3.90's man
nearly all of the acceleration of 4.10's and not as much revving.
3.90's is what i used to tun with the 5.4 3v.

Well see i told my self i was going to work on the outside before i work on the eng. So i dont know what i want to do to the eng.Ruffnuts wrote:You going to stay n/a or add a power adder in the future?
A supercharge would be nice. But i dont have 5gs for one. So i was going to do the gears then get a programer. Then after that i have no clue what to do next. But i gess gears and programer is a start.. .
Re: Thinking about getting some gears
Conventional wisdom says 4.10s n/a and 3.73s FI. I'm not sure I agree. It really depends on how you intend to use your car.
4.10s are 25% more gear than the stock 3.27s. 3.73s are 14% more gear. 4.10s put more torque at the wheels than 3.73. There are a lot of people that swear by them but there are disadvantages. The first is that you will have a very short first gear. It bothers some people. Some strong 4.10 advocates will say to take off in second on the street if it bothers you. Most people have traction problems on the street with 4.10s. This can be overcome by running drag radials but drag radials may not be the best choice of tire for a daily driver. I have heard that there really isn't a loss of gas mileage because you just drive in the next higher gear. But there is a definite loss of gas mileage on the interstate. I lost approximately 2 mpg when I switched to 3.73s. 4.10s would probably result in a 3 mpg loss on the interstate. Interstate crusing rpm is also higher with 4.10s. At 80 mph you tach will read around 3000 rpm. With 3.73s it will read around 2700.

Re: Thinking about getting some gears
3.73 is what im gonna go with. 4.10's 1st gear is to short for me, but they do make for alot of torque at the wheels.

Re: Thinking about getting some gears
4.10s or nothing. I have 4.10 in my 700hp car and would never change them. I have no traction problems. 1st gear is not that short at all and after driving it for awhile you don't even notice the difference. Before I went boosted I was getting the same exact gas mileage as my wifes car with stock gears.
FI or NA means nothing when it comes to gears. The only thing that matters is auto or manual. For a manual get 4.10s for an auto get 4.30s. 3.73s will only leave you wanting more.
If you get them PM me and I can get them installed for you for $250.

Re: Thinking about getting some gears
You must smoke some really good stuff man... 4.30's for a DD auto GT? Don't think so.
If it was an 03/04 Cobra (obviously manual), MAYBE.
I have 3.73's in my car and it is a manual, 75MPH in 5th gear is @ 2500 RPM. If I had bought my car with 4.10's I would have had them removed and had 3.73's installed.

Re: Thinking about getting some gears
You'll love the 3.73's if you get them, I've put them into just about every car I've had and they just make a 5 spd manual car so much more driveable you have to wonder why it didn't come with it to start with, you can drive 35-40 mph in 5th without that bogging feeling also. And it really didn't hurt the mpg city or hwy, if anything it helped mine seemed like because right after I had installed the last set into my 02 GT we took a trip to st. louis for a concert and the needle on the gas gauge didn't move at all until we were in paducah ky. and it was just down to just under the half mark once we hit st. louis city limits. At the track it cut a couple of tenths off the e.t. even with tirespin and pedaling the throttle, stock it was running 9.5's, after gears dropped it to 9.3's but a guy I work with and I raced one day (not at track though) and he had ran 8.8's with his car on dr's and I was door handle to door handle with him and even pulled him slightly on the topend (his was an auto w/4.10's). I've pondered the gear thought myself in my Mach 1 but since its already got 3.55's it would kinda be a waste for me to go the 3.73 route with this one, I guess it would be 4.10 or nothing at all, IDK, I'll probably take the plunge eventually gotta wait and see how some other situations work out first but don't fear the gear, once you get it in you'll wish you'd have done it sooner I swear...
