Rumor: 2013 Shelby GT-500 Gets 620 Horses

Car and Driver magazine is reporting that the gurus at SVT have been working on the next level for the 2013 Shelby GT-500. Their sources and ours indicate that there is big news on the horizon including some major engine upgrades.

It is reported that the 2013 Shelby GT-500 will get an increase in displacement from 5.4 liters to 5.8. The current supercharger will be replaced by a larger and more efficient Eaton TVS unit, likely 2.3 liters in displacement. The horsepower output is said to jump up to around 620, from 550 in the 2012 Shelby GT-500.

This is big news as Chevrolet plans of rolling out their GT-500 beater soon, the ZL1 which will have a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 with somewhere around 550hp. Ford no doubt wants to keep the Mustang on top of that figure, which makes the boys at the SVT office come in handy.

It is also reported that the 2013 GT-500 will get a minor facelift to eschew some of its retro highlights. This will likely be a look bridging toward the new style of the next generation Mustang in the works for 2014-2015.

As Car and Driver supposes and we agree, the horsepower increase will likely only net mild increases in acceleration times. The real power likey shows up in passing times, track lap times and potentially a shorter quarter mile.

Mustang Evolution site yesterday had a fairly extensive guess about what's coming in 2014 with an interview with a Ford exec. talking about a smaller platform than the 2005 on in an effort to "position Mustang for the next 50 years" . Hmm. My 06 Gt is already pretty much a 2 seater. Not crazy about Mustangs going smaller , even talk of adding the ecoboost engines . Will be interesting to see what happens in the name of improving gas mileage.

I wouldn't mind have ing the ecoboost V6 in my car...

Wow, I see no end to this Horse Power war any time soon. Really makes the 180H.P. GT of yesteryears look really stupid, in fact my 380 in my car is starting to look stupid. Just keep in mind Horse Power sells cars but torque wins races!!!!

Actually getting the power to the ground is what really wins the race...

Frank, I think it's more about the fact that Ford and Shelby are going to put a "beast" on the showroom floor that will conquer (like you said) the horsepower war going on currently between Ford, Chrysler, and Chevy. Hell, it's even going to trump Ford's current supercar, the "GT." Or has everyone already forgotten that beautifully le mans inspired piece of artwork.

I'm not picking on anyone, but a car like that I can park in my driveway, boast to my friends and neighbors that it's fully insured at reasonable rate, because lord knows the actually numbers will be understated to the insurance companies, then spank the doors off of a ZR1....well hell that gets my blood pumping better than a Viagra would I'm sure! Hahaha!!!! The heated seats that will keep my tush warm after I freshly leave a skid mark both in the road and my pants will even be better!!! Lol!!!

Thats all true but I have to wait and see about beating a Z06 Vette. To this date no Mustang has ever been able to handle the Vettes on a road course. Yes of course I would love to have this car, its a Shelby and badass! But what I am saying is when does to much become to much. My Mustang is pumping out 380 on a blower and it is very well balanced and can scare the crap out of me when I want it to. I hate to say it even my past GT500 (1967) with a double carb 428 cubic inch motor was way to much for the car it was in, how in the World can you tell me a stock Mustang can handle that power, and I say it can't! Now on the other hand what I am saying is please stop the horse power war because you are making cars like mine look so small and weak, PLEASE!!!!!!

Between the two I would take the Shelby no mater what. For a number of reasons but one of which is that it has a back seat and I have a wife and two kids to haul around!!.... It would be totally awsome to be able to cruse around town with the whole family and still be able to stomp on just about anything that comes against you!!! I say way to go Ford and Shelby!!!

Both my kids love riding in the Stang. When my daughter was born, three weeks went by before I broke out the Mustang. Well one day I needed to get some chips from the store and I decided to take the Stang. I grabed my son and loaded him in the car and he was smiling. I stomped on it and he started to laugh and clap his hands. My daughter is now 7 months old and she too is all smiles when she is in daddy's Mustang.
