Grand am Empty Grand am

Post by Blitz Mon May 03, 2010 12:28 pm

I have a grand am that makes a "RC car" noise while being driven. also while turning it makes a grinding noise. it might still be this but the power steering pump and column were replaced a year ago i believe. What else could it be or do you think it is? thank you.

my friends car just did that and i believe with was either the bearing in the idler pulley or the tension pulley was bad.... We all thought it was the power steering pump cause thats what it sounded like...

Could be wheel bearing or half shaft/cv joint

I work for a chevy dealer and the first thing you should check is the wheel bearing. The N body cars like Grand Am and
malibus Eat them all the time. GM bearings are super expensive. Call carquest and ask for a bearing made in america with a lifetime warranty. Much cheaper. My 99 Grand am went through both of them but had over 100.000 miles.
You would only hear the noise while your car is going down the road not sitting still. It gets louder when you turn in the direction of the bad bearing because you are loading it with weight. Good way to tell which one is bad.

Okay thanks. The RC car noise happens all the time. even at idle but its alot quieter. the grinding happens when we turn the wheel. whether moving or not. idk if that changes any opinions or not tho.

ok it is not a wheel bearing noise if the car is sitting still. Check your power steering fluid too maks sure it's not empty.
