I use a good degreaser (50/50) mix on the rims. Simple green or some purple stuff that I cant think of the name right now

I use bathroom tile cleaner. It cut's through the break dust and grime faster than anything else I've ever used.

if youre talking about corrosion.... then really the only way is to grind it off. or lightly sand it if its not too bad.

I'm telling you all, there's nothing better than bathroom tile cleaner... Any residue that's left is easily wiped up with a wet rag. (Go into your bathroom, get your cleaner and run out to your car and Just try it.) Dooo it Do it!
