Which Gears Are Better?
Fixin' to buy gears. Looking at Ford Racing, Strange, Pro 5.0, and Motive. Is there anything bad about or should I avoid any of these?

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
Just use Ford Racing. If you use Motive and you have a whine the shop that installs them can blame the quality of the brand.
Re: Which Gears Are Better?
All good points...Never heard any complaints from Ford Racing products. Heard lots about Motive....thanks all.

Go with Ford Racing. I had motive gears and they didn't whine but I have read of a lot of other people having issues with them whining.

A few years ago FR contracted Motive to machine their gears. They were so bad FR said screw you guys and started making the gears again themselves.

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
wish i had seen this sooner, but I would have suggested Moser gears.
as would our newest member Qwkphkr who runs a 7 to 8 second 1/4 mile turbo car.
I had a set of FRPP's blow up on me last summer. After that I'll never stick another FRPP gear anywhere near my car. 1 bitten twice shy.
I went with Moser 3.73's, moser 31 spline rear axles, new axle bearings and seals, 31 spline cobra limited slip diff w/ traction-lok, and a solid crush sleeve, with a timken bearing kit. not a problem to date, and no gear whine or vibrations whatsoever. Essentially Offroad in Murfreesboro did my gear install.

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
You shouldn't have any troubles, FRPP's are a good product. I'm sure they don't have a flawless record with quality (nobody does), but I know if they were junk everyone would be screaming it!

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
you will get whine if they are not installed correctly, but yes i will agree about a shop will blame that whine on quality

Just my opinion but I beg to disagree.

Read step 5.
Check ring gear back face for flatness. Generally after heat-treating there may be a degree of taper. This may be rectified by lapping gear on sand paper on a glass flat plate. This will give you a more even and uniform pattern when setting up your new gear set.
This is what caused my ring gear bolts to back out on my FRPP 3.73's last summer. What I find interesting is Ford doesn't put this set of instructions in the gears with the box so that the customer will be well informed. So unless you know specifically about these gears, Ford expects you to go to their website and download it, but they don't bother to even tell you to do that, so a buyer wouldn't even know to check the gears for flatness and taper, let alone go to the website to download the instructions. Bottom line, FRPP should put these instructions in the box, so the customer knows. and that's why I'll never buy POS FRPP gears again. When I confronted them about it over the phone, they blamed my mechanic for a crappy install. It wasn't his fault, I watched him do everything. He tightened everything to spec, by the shop manual. I then pointed out this Instruction Sheet, and told them to read step 5...the guy just stuttered for a few minutes and stumbled through excuses, and then told me FRPP wasn't liable for my gears going out. Their mistake cost me $1100.00. To hell with FRPP gears. They are junk, plain and simple. Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me. I wasn't about to make that mistake a 2nd time. Moser is the only way to go when it comes to gears. PERIOD.

I just put FRPP gears in my rear end last week and that instruction sheet you posted was with my gear set. :^scratch^:

i guess I just musta got screwed then, cause they weren't with the first set of gears I ordered. when i ordered my second set, they weren't in there either. thanks to qwkphkr, i sent the 2nd set of FRPP's back and got Mosers, and I've been very pleased with them. no issues whatsoever.

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
Old topic but Im new so Im going through and catching up...lol
I use Frpp gears, always have and always will.
The step 5 I am only assuming you are refering to the ring gear runout, which I believe should be no more than .004 as per ford specs.
This is something that should alway be checked, reguardless the brand. Is something that can be caught prior to running the gears down the road.
Ring gear run out is also why they tell you to check backlash in at least three different places on the ring gear. I promise all three will not be 100% identical. This is due to the ring gear runout.
Another good thing to check is differential runout. Mount the differentail in the housing with no ring gear and spin it. Sometime it is not the gear that is defaced but rather the diff.

Re: Which Gears Are Better?
i had a set of motive 4:10's and they were quiet. never had a problem 1. but i would go with frpp just to support ford in these bad economic times. never heard of a problem with the frpp gears.
